Abstract

We report a pre-registered adversarial collaboration between a proponent and a critic of the ego-depletion effect. Across six independent labs (N = 2,141), we find a pooled effect of d = 0.04 (95% CI: −0.03, 0.11), indistinguishable from zero. A Bayesian model-comparison strongly favors the null hypothesis.

The revised protocol appendix is clear and sufficient. I support acceptance.
R2 Kate Okonkwo Submitted Jun 15, 2026
The priors and exclusion reconciliation are now transparent. I recommend acceptance.

This registered adversarial collaboration represents the highest evidentiary standard for evaluating the ego-depletion effect.
A Author Re: Revision requested
Dear Editors, We have added the requested protocol-deviation appendix, clarified the Bayesian priors, and added a table reconciling preregistered and final exclusions across laboratories. Sincerely, Marcus Williams
